Chapter 1

This is the story of a girl, my best friend Faith Patterson. She’s 15, and often misunderstood. She has a lot of role models in her life, and a lot of awesome friends, like me- Sam, and then her friend MJ, he’s pretty cool, and then there’s her other friend Matt, as well as Sarah, and her other friend Sara too. The list goes on and on.

Faith has always been a happy go lucky person up until she entered high school. Faith has been living with a condition called cerebral palsy ever since she was an infant. She has a mix of two types of cerebral palsy, one affecting her legs and her muscle tone, as well as tightness in her muscles, resulting in an inability to walk. The other type of cerebral palsy she has effects her hand eye coordination, she has crutches, but the majority of the time she uses a wheelchair because her crutches sometimes pose a danger. Her condition is also known as CP.

I have a type of CP too. Mine just affects my ability to walk though, my war is a lot easier to win, and surgery has helped me fight. Faith doesn’t want surgery, she doesn’t like anesthetic. When her mom was pregnant with her, she had appendicitis, and had to have her appendix removed, otherwise she and Faith would have died. Faith’s theory about her disability is that the anesthetic from her mother’s surgery affected her brain, causing her to be born disabled.

Faith doesn’t have a lot of understanding on life, and is constantly focusing on her imperfections. Faith is a schoolgirl for life. She wants to get a teaching degree in elementary education when she goes to college. She goes to church, but her faith in the Lord is questionable. It’s funny how her name is Faith, yet her faith in God is questionable.

Faith wishes that God will cure her of her disability, she prays, and prays hoping that someday her prayers will be answered, she has the hope, but it’s like her prayers are often out of desperation. She knows God is there, but she feels unheard.

Faith lives with her grandparents. Her parents are divorced. When Faith was 7 years old, her Dad came down with a type of cancer called Hodgkins Lymphoma, and he nearly died.

Her parents got divorced because her mother can’t deal with her own personal self esteem issues. Her mom moved out of the house when she was 11. Shortly after her mom’s move, due to his job, Faith’s Dad had to begin traveling around the U.S.A. every two weeks or so. He is a chef and a Kitchen Manger for a restaurant chain. He went from Pittsburgh, to Baltimore, to Philadelphia, and finally after Faith’s twelfth birthday, her Dad was sent to IL for a supposed one year, until a restaurant opened in Pittsburgh, one in which he could assume the same position.

It’s been 2 and a half, almost three years since he’s moved out there. Now, Faith’s Dad has a girlfriend named Angie, from the way Faith talks about her, she sounds pretty awesome.

Faith and I have known each other since preschool, and we’ve gone to school together all of our lives. The school we attended in our younger years goes from kindergarten to 8th grade. When Faith was 11, she was finally able to get an aide. (An adult who follows you around all day… They are sometimes a bother, sometimes they’re cool too.) At first, Faith didn’t really like her aide that much, she was always “too friendly.” After awhile, Faith’s aide finally cracked her, and they began to get to know each other. Now, they are the best of friends, and are “like Oreo cookies and milk.” Faith tells her aide everything, even about her home life, and even sometimes about boys she likes.

I remember the summer of 8th grade Faith was really serious with one of her neighbors. She’s known him since she was 7. She really liked him, but eventually he became abusive. When school started, Faith told her aide about this boy and me as well. Upon finding this out, Faith’s aide told her to tell her family, but she wouldn’t. Faith’s aide gave her some motherly advice because things didn’t seem to be going well at all for her and this boy had her captivated. Faith considered the advice she had received from her aide to be judgmental. Eventually Faith found the courage to tell her family, but things didn’t end there between her and her Romeo.

Faith had a rough 8th grade year, she got a lot of homework, but the thing that ate at her the most was leaving the school she practically grew up in, it was like her 2nd home, as well as mine, and we were crushed when we had to move on, but well we had no choice. On top of that, Faith and I had shared the same aide, and that was cool, but there was no telling what the future would hold. The week before our promotion, Faith and I were both on an emotional rollercoaster, but Faith was slowly fading away. We had found out that our aide would no longer be with us beyond middle school, and that we would be each be assigned an aide upon entering high school.
