Where to live in Pittsburgh, PA?

I am a single, 26 year old male, starting work as a medical resident in Pittsburgh this summer. I am looking to live in a fashionable neighberhood, with bars, restaurants, that is safe, predominantly young professionals, etc... I have heard that Shadyside is the best place for me. But I see that much of the housing is old.... I am wondering if there are other areas in Pittsburgh that I may like. I have seen housing listings for newer looking, more affordeable housing. Advice is appreciated.Where to live in Pittsburgh, PA?
Shadyside - Trendy, upscale

Squirrel Hill - Upscale in parts, college student area, Jewish Community

Oakland - Run down college student area

Hill District - Crime infested, low income area

South Side - Dirty in parts, upscale in other parts, wild night life

Regent Square - Average Area

Wilkinsburg - Crime infested, low income area

Swissvale - Average Area

Lawrenceville - Not a great area

Bloomfield - Not a great area

Fox Chapel - Rich area, very upscale, further away

Morningside - Average area, not great in parts

East Liberty - Bad area

Point Breeze - Average Area
Yes the buildings are old but in Shadyside and Squirrel Hill, they can still be very nice inside. That is the charm of Pittsburgh. My daughter went to Chatham there and lived around the 5800 block on 5th. She loved it and found it super easy to take the bus to her internship at UPMC.

Just north or there, near Maryland, between 5th and Liberty is a very charming little walkable district of great restaurants and all the things that make for a charming urban lifestyle.

If you are driving though, maybe 1/2 hour away, the very best part of town is Fox Chapel. North of the Allegheny River.

My daughter also has friends in Swissvale. A little further away, living in an old but fully remodeled house.Where to live in Pittsburgh, PA?
Most UPMC hospitals are in the Oakland area,

Oakland's crime rate is pretty high though.

Shadyside is a little better, though houses are older

most are well kept. This is city living though (but close

to yuppie shoppes and coffee houses)! Parking in hospital

area is very expensive, so busing to job is advisable.

Good Luck

PS Stay away from Regent Square and Swissvale (also crime infested)

Fox Chapel is for "VERY" rich

other suburbs (if you have a car) that are considered "safe"

Baldwin, Whitehall, Bethel Park, South Park
Shadyside
Pittsburgh is a pretty old city so a lot of the buildings are older but depending on the are you are looking in many of those older buildings have been remodeled. Shadyside is a bit on the expensive side, but very "hip" and has tons of places to eat and drink. Squirrel Hill is close by and a little cheaper, predominantly Jewish families and college students, once again tons of shops, restaurants, and bars. Both Shadyside and Squirrel Hill are close to Oakland, which I'm assuming you'll be working since that's where most of the hospitals are. Regent Square is a little further away, but just as nice and there's a huge park Frick Park if you're into that sort of thing.

If you're looking for something a little cheaper and more "indie" check out Bloomfield or Lawrenceville--fashionable in their own right and tons of places to go but a little grittier.

Good luck! Pittsburgh is a great place to live
