My husband and I are considering a move to Pittsburgh in the future. For those of you who have lived there before or are currently living there, what are the best neighborhoods/suburbs and which are the ones to avoid?
We are specifically looking for an area where we can raise a family, so nice yards, good schools and safety are a must. Also, we would like an area with easy access to stores, markets, restaurants, and cultural opportunities.
Looking for serious answers only. Thanks!Best Place to Live in Pittsburgh?
I live in Squirrel Hill and I love it here.
There is a huge range of prices for houses so you can probably find a house that fits your budget. Though since it is near-ish the city it may be more expensive to get a bigger yard.
Safety is no concern. I feel safe walking anywhere in Squirrel Hill at any time of the day or night. There are tons of kids, many of whom walk around by themselves.
There is easy access to shops and restaurants. There is a huge Jewish community and a number of temples if you want cultural opportunities.
The only thing I'm not sure of is schools. I think some Pittsburgh public schools in the city (or this area) aren't the greatest, but there are several private schools that I hear are really good.
I hope this helps and I hope you decide to move here. It is a wonderful place!
I currently live in Pittsburgh. A lot of people prefer the suburbs compared to the city. But if you want easy access to things the city would be better. I would say the South Side but it has alot of bars. The North side and the Hill District (they get a bad rap but there are several neighborhoods to choose from all are not the same). Squirrel Hill and Shadyside are good areas with easy access. Only area I can think of to stay totally away from is Homewood. These areas are all in the city. The suburbs that are considered pretty good are Bethel Park, Mt. Lebanon, Wexford, Cranberry, Baldwin, West Mifflin, Upper St. Clair are some. It just depends on how far out you want to be. In Pittsburgh alot of people feel the schools in the suburbs are better than the city schools. The Pittsburgh Public schools get a pretty bad rap.(Some are better than others) You will have to just do some research and talk to people and visit to get your own opinion.Best Place to Live in Pittsburgh?
Real estate is very cheap compared to other suburban areas. Doesn't really matter where you live, most areas have what you are looking for. If either of you are planning on commuting to downtown Pitt though, I would recommend living on the north side. It's a great area (other than all the old people who watch fox news in my apartments gym) and the commute from the north is really great.
Great sports city as well, if that is something that tickles your fancy.
